Genovese Coffee Aids BNG Landcare Network
Local coffee importers Genovese Coffee has supplied some 4000 hessian sacks to the Buloke and Nothern Grampians Landcare network. The sacks, which have avoided the landfill pit will be used by the network as weed and mulch mats, to pick up litter and to block rabbit burrows during fumigation. This valuable support represents impressive forsight from the coffee importers.
When Martin Jackson, the operations manager at Genovese Coffee was faced with a backlog of hessian sacks, he was determined they wouldn't find landfill. After sending a small number to Zoo's for animal bedding, but this market wasn't big enough to use the thousands of 60kg hessian sacks brought into Australia each year.
Martin rang Landcare Australia Limited who put out a call to landcare groups. This call was answered by Kevin Spence, of the Buloke and Northern Grampians Network, who picked up over 4000 sacks late in 2009.
The sacks are used as weed and mulch mats, to pick up litter and to block rabbit burrows during fumigation. Kevin says the environmental responsibility shown by Genovese and thier co-operation with Landcare is a shining example of corporate responsibility and care.
A.Genovese & Sons, was established in 1970 in a small factory in Brunswick, Melbourne. Alfio Genovese set about sourcing coffee beans from around the world, then roasting and blending them to replicate the true Italian espresso. He was so successful, that his children and grand-children now run the business from a state-of the art roasting plant, supplying Genovese Coffee Australia-wide.
Raw coffee beans are sourced from the finest growing regions of the world, including Brazil, Colombia, Costa-Rica, Guatemala, Peru, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, New Guinea, India and Indonesia - and they all arrive in Australia in 60kg hessian sacks. Genovese alone brings in several thousand sacks a year.
Martin Jackson says he is proud to be able to assist the network, "Genovese Coffee is very happy with this arrangement; not only do the bags avoid landfill, they are also supporting a worthwhile cause in vital revegetation and land restoration work,' he said. "We look forward to more opportunities to support Landcare in the future."
Landcare values the contribution of Australia's corporate community, and hopes many more of our nation's companies follow the Genovese example.
