About us
Description of the group, its history and its aims.
Friends of Campbells Creek Landcare Group
We are a group of local residents who volunteer our time towards protecting and improving the environment in the Campbells Creek catchment, particularly the creek and its immediate surrounds.
Our Vision
Is to make a community asset of the creek and creek-side lands: “a healthy, restored environment linked with nearby habitat and actively used and cared for by the community and visitors.”
Our Plan and Projects
We have a 10 year plan of actions and projects to achieve our goals.
Water quality
With the North Central Catchment Management Authority, the Environment Protection Authority, the Shire Council and Coliban Water we aim to improve the water quality and flows in the creek. Our goal is to have the creek a safe and pleasant place for swimming and other recreations as well as good quality habitat for platypus, fish and other wildlife.
Revegetation
Every year we re-plant more of the local native plants that used to grow along Campbells Creek and nearby areas. Some of our member’s plantings are now 21 years old and are now good habitat for many birds and other wildlife that previously had nowhere else to live.
Weed control
Over the last seven years we have just about wiped out Blackberry and Gorse on public land along 4 kilometers of the creek. We are also attempting to get rid of other weeds from our area: we have eliminated an introduced Cumbungi, Perennial Thistle, Californian Stinkweed and are still working on Patterson’s Curse and St John’s Wort. Another priority for us is to reduce the willow stranglehold on the creek.
We follow up on all these weeds and more every year.
Access and Pathways
To improve recreational and educational access to the creek, we and the Shire Council are connecting Campbells Creek to Castlemaine with a shared cycle/footpath. One kilometre of the path is now complete!
Parkland
Along with the Shire Council and Department of Sustainability and Environment we are working towards establishing a community managed public streamside park.
Precinct Plans
Where adjoining landholders are enthusiastic, we plan ‘precinct’ developments that demonstrate practices that best balance nature conservation with the needs of the neighbours.
About the group
The group was formed in early 2000 after a public meeting called for better environmental management of the creek following a massive spill of untreated sewage into the creek.
We incorporated as a landcare group with the Victorian Farmers Federation and have elected executive members and produce annual financial statements.
Since then, on average, we have obtained and spent over $20,000 per year on environmental restoration works.
We have a strong and growing membership and hold regular evening meetings in the Campbells Creek Primary School Staff Room.
