Mt Pleasant Creek Catchment and Landcare

The Mount Pleasant Creek Catchment Landcare Group held its inaugral meeting on 25 January2002. One of the first group was a bus tour of the area to familiarise members with the diversity of the district and the variety of landuse pursuits. Over the past 3 1/2 years, a wide range of topics have been covered by excursions, field days and guest speakers. These include: Plane flights over the whole catchment; field days on soils and weeds; bus tours to Creswick Landcare centre and surrounding district; bus tour to Pyramid Hill to inspect salt works and then a visit to Kerang where successful plantings of saltbush and trees have greatly improved the viability of a property; guest speakers on topics such as pest plants and animals, watertable bore monitoring, chemical use and regulations, tree planting, native vegetation, salinity, alternative enterprises; fox control. Development of a Local Action Plan and a project to eradicate substantial areas of spiny rush have been two main focus topics. The group has also "adopted" a section of the Northern Highway at Toolleen and conducts litter collection in this area twice a year. Committee members have participated in a number of Shire of Campaspe Landcare Network meetings and events organised by the North Central CMA. Regular newsletters are distributed to group members and the local community. The group would welcome new members. Your participation could be as simple as taking care to eradicate the weeds around your home or managing remnant vegetation on your property. Family membership is $15 per year. For more information, please contact the person below, or Rhonda Day, Shire of Campaspe Landcare Coordinator 1300 666 535.
